Presentation Photo Castle Tyrol
It’s almost 950 years that Castle Tyrol stands there on its morainic hill above Merano. In the 12th and 13th centuries the counts of Tyrol forged and governed the land from here. Since then it is considered the symbol of Tyrol’s history and identity. In 2002 the South Tyrolean Museum of Cultural History has been opened. During the renovation the whole hill has been studied in architectural and archaeological ways. Some of the highlights are to put on:
- the unique romanesque marble portals
- the Chapel with its art treasures from the 14th cent.
- the exhibition about mediaeval every-day life in the Refectory Cellar
- Childrens’ Castle Tyrol, where the youngest visitors can try on the vests of important people oft he past
- the dungeon with the exhibit about the 14th century in South Tyrol
- the former service wing where the temporary exhibitions are presented, and where you can visit our bookshop and café
- the Outer Bailey with the excavated early christian church and an inviting seating area where you can enjoy the amazing view of the Adige Valley
